Magda Edelmännin (aka Mrs. Thomas Stone) had a soft smile on her face as she looked down upon the sweet little eight-month-old baby boy she was holding. Across the room, seated in a comfortable rocking chair, the baby’s mother, Dina Kastenmayer (aka Mrs. Phillip Gribbleflotz) gently rocked the chair as she breastfed his twin sister. Magda looked up and watched Dina for a while. She looked so serene and content. One day, in about six months’ time, Magda would be doing that with her own baby. She quickly touched the wooden armrest of the chair she was sitting in. It did not do to count one’s chickens, but she had passed the first trimester this time.

The sound of footsteps resonating on the wooden floor had both Magda and Dina looking over their shoulders as Ursula Mittelhausen, Diana Cheng, Lise Gebauer, and Marianna Rovarini walked in.

“Are you doing another operation?” Dina called out.

All four of the women nodded. Ursula had found yet another suitable person (in a word, rich) with a bladder stone problem. She would accompany the others as a chaperone and business agent while they performed the actual operation in the home of the client.

“Poor Corporal Böhm. I’m sure he would rather be helping you than chasing around the countryside with Phillip and Thomas.”

“Do you think they’re safe?” Magda asked.

“Of course they’re safe,” Ursula said. “Corporal Böhm is a very sensible young man. He’ll keep them out of trouble.”
